New POS 221 students please enroll in POS 221: Arizona Constitution and Government (New)

This is a foundational course on the United States government. Topics covered will be: key American ideas, the American Constitution, the Congress, the Presidency, the Courts, the party system, the bureaucracy, interest groups, local politics, and the role of the media in generating public political opinions. We will follow each topic in the course from its historical foundations, through the histories of issues and controversies arising from particular structures, towards a better understanding of American politics today. 

Surveys the Arizona Constitution, with special attention to operation of state and local government. Requirement for teacher certification. One lecture.
Surveys the U.S. Constitution from its philosophical and historical roots to its modern day structure. It is intended to satisfy Arizona's requirement for teacher certification. One lecture.
